Inclusive education is an effective approach implemented in most educational Institutions to ensure equal educational opportunities for every child irrespective of their background. Inclusive education is the only way to incorporate all the children together in a single classroom along with their diversity and focus on the strengths of each child ensuring that their real potential is attained. However, there have been various barriers that limit the implementation of Inclusive Education in making mainstream learning environments comfortable for all.

Here are some significant barriers to inclusive education:

Lack of Awareness

Less Awareness of the concept of Learning Difficulties results in negative attitudes towards children with special needs. When Society, educators, and fellow classmates hold a very low opinion about special children it immediately lowers the self-esteem and the morale of children. Being able to handle the challenges associated with attitudinal Barriers is a Challenge in making Inclusive Education a success.

Curriculum Problems

The curriculum of any School is designed as per the appropriate age group of that Class. But in a class, if there are children with diverse learning needs the curriculum needs to be modified and adapted as per the needs of Special children. Despite a lot of efforts, it is a task to adapt and modify the syllabus due to which the educational needs of all children are not met leaving some children behind academically.

Prejudice

No matter how much we say there is a defined mindset of the community about children with Special needs. Narrow-mindedness on the part of classmates, educators create an emotionally discomfiting atmosphere for the children where they would hate coming to School. Timely measures must be taken to keep in check the overall educational atmosphere of the school to promote a healthy learning atmosphere for all children that uplifts their morale and self-esteem for leading a successful life.

Administrative Barriers

Lack of support and guidance from school leadership can lead to inconsistent inclusive practices. Without clear policies or administrative backing, teachers may struggle to implement inclusive methods effectively.

Lack of adequate resources

Inclusive Education incorporates specialized teaching materials and specially crafted aids that need heavy financial investment. At times Schools might not have the required financial resources to invest in such specialized materials and adaptive technologies. Without the use of such exclusively designed aids, it is impossible to cater to the educational needs of the children whose learning entirely is based on these strategies. This restricts the achievement of basic learning goals of the child leading to lesser enrolment of special children in schools.

Biased Participation Opportunities

During School functions or any events if special children are not given opportunities to showcase their talents it leads to major disappointment for the child as they miss out on significant development opportunities that can accentuate their social and emotional development. Even today educators would not want to make the extra effort to train special children giving them a fair chance to display their special skills or talents.

Poorly Trained Educators

There is a lot of resistance to learning new strategies or pedagogies for helping children with special needs on the part of Educators. This rigidity of not putting in the desired effort leads to poor learning outcomes as the teacher does not understand how to cater to the academic needs of the child. In multilingual environments or where students have communication disabilities, language can hinder effective learning.
