Need for Blending Learning

The fast changing technologies have put some special demands on the education sector. The existing education system is successfully meeting the slowly changing need of the society of the earlier times. The education needs emanating from fast changing technologies could not be responded by the conventional educational system. The huge gap in, manpower requirements has thus created a gap in the need for alternate systems.

According to early childhood care education the future educational systems have to respond to the following needs

  • The convergence of formal education programme, distance education programme for the dropouts, continuing education programme for the professionals from the industry.
  • Providing education for fast changing technologies – anywhere, anytime, learning with synchronous and asynchronous learning.

Traditional Learning Process: The traditional educational process as a classroom model because it is such a similar and accepted educational process as a classroom model because it is such and learning has numerous weakness. A significant weakness is that classroom environment. However, the classroom model of instruction learning is separated from and has little relevance to work based tasks. The reach in terms of number of students is limited. The quality of content depends entirely on the teacher and very Often various form excellent delivery to poor delivery of content.

Computer-mediate Learning: Computer mediate learning is seen as alternatives to the traditional class room model of learning. Rather than attending traditional classes students receive their learning through a computer at a time and place that is most convenient for their schedule. Much of the justification for the implementing technology based learning is based on reducing employee time away from the job, reducing travel expenses, and shortening the amount of time students spend in their learning experiences.

A major weakness of technology based learning is that little consideration is given to delivering effective instructions with the medium. Most technology based learning is little more than an electronic form of instruction quick’s which is equivalent to an electronic page turner. Etienne Wenger describes technology based learning as “Computer mediate teaching programme that walk students through individualized session covering reams of information and drill practice. Another significant weakness of technology based learning is it failure to provide effective social transactions for learners. In a traditional class room student are able to interact with each other and their instructor to socially construct their knowledge. In technology based learning this social aspect of learning is significant by reduced or this completely. Unavailable to students. The learning instruction is a one-on-one relationship between the students and instructional content.

Blended Learning: The branded learning environment emanates from the power of technology to stimulate the traditional classroom and build on its strengths and yet overcome the limitations that exit in the computer mediated learning model. In the classroom the teacher provide familiar learning methods such as lecture discussions, media access (the web, reading, video, audio), activities Lab experiments, Problems solving, etc.

According to Teacher Training Courses students in the classroom learn through social interactions by having discussions, exchange of ideas and sharing their experiences with their classmates. The concept of computer mediated blended learning environments has made collaborative learning a reality today.
