Mental health can and should be a lived experience for teachers and pupils. The teacher’s part is greater in mental health education than in physical health education because some of the mental health problems are caused by school situations and others are aggravated by school conditions. They can help to establish a therapeutic environment for children who have problems of living. Teachers can domuch to reveal the way of life that will make it possible for individuals to grow towards social, intellectual and emotional maturity. They can do it by or mental hygiene. They can do it by-putting a positive emphasis on the mental health that many already enjoy retarding further deterioration after the first symptoms of ill health have been observed and helping to mend those who have already been to run by circumstances. It is beholding all that is dark, imperfect, stupid and guilty in one. We keep them private to protect ourselves. The hysterical behaviours are emotionally expressive behaviours but possessive of secrets. Every personal secret has the effect of a sin or of guilt whether or not it is from the stand point of popular morality, a wrongful secret. We must never forget that the crooked paths of neurosis lead to many obstinate habits. Despite any amount of understanding these don’t disappear until they are replaced by other habits. But habits are only won by exercise, and appropriate education is the sole means to this end.
