Concept of mental health – fostering mental health

In his book Mental Hygiene in Public Health. P.V. Lewan defines mentally healthy individual is one who is himself satisfied, lives peacefully with his neighbours, makes healthy citizenship role.

“Mental health is the adjustment of human beings to the world and to each other with a maximum of effectiveness and happiness. It is the ability to maintain an even temper, about intelligence, socially considerable behavior and a happy disposition — says K.A. Meringer in his book “The Human Mind.”

Thus the Chief Characteristic of Mental Health is evidence of adjustment. The greater the degree of successful adjustment, the greater will be the mental health of the individual.

Due to lack proper of mental health education. In a school situation mental health education is a crucial concept as it takes care of prevention as well as treatment of mental illness, disorder and maladjustment. It also suggests ways and means of maintaining proper mental health thereby helps in the proper mental intellectual growth and development of individual.

Role of School

Though the maintenance of proper mental health of children is not entirely the responsibility of the school and the teacher, yet they are supposed to play a significant role in helping their students in the maintenance of proper mental health. According to Preschool Teacher Training the following are the some of the measures which can be adopted:

  1. Good Physical Health: A sound body is seat of sound mind. Therefore, the school and teacher should plan for good physical development by providing regular physical ‘education in the school curriculum, regular physical health checkups and medical care of the students and make the students to adopt proper health habits.
  2. Proper Emotional Development: Schools should plan for various activities for balanced emotional development. For example: Cultural activities, dramatics, celebrations of different religious festivals, teachings from the holy books, migration of students to different parts of the country -and living together with people of different faiths definitely develops universal brotherhood and emotional integration.
  3. Proper Social Relationship and Acceptance: Nothing is more bad and harmful to the student than the rejection of himself by the group or society. He needs to be accepted and admired by the group and his society. Therefore, proper care should be taken to help the child in his adjustment with his classmates and other.
  4. Behaviour of Teacher: Teachers are second parents of children. The mental health of students is very much influenced by the attitude and behavior of teacher. According to Early Childhood Education the teachers should take care of the following:

They should be sympathetic towards student needs, problems and provide feeling of warmth and affection for their children.

They should be unbiased and treat all students equal without any favouritism.

They should understand the problems of individual students, individual differences in learning.

They should never be authoritative and dictatorial in dealing with learning problems of students.

Nothing is more disturbing to a child than the inconsistency in the attitude of teacher.
