Development of the Aesthetic Sense in family
The tendency of creativity and aesthetic appreciation is evident in the child from the very beginning. It is this tendency is the basis of his aesthetic sense. Emotions also help in this. Young children find much pleasure in drawing all kinds of figures with colors and pencil. The artistic compositions and productions of children are their natural self expression, although elders may find it difficult to find anything artistic in them. The self expression can be further refined through guidance and directions from teachers. If children are encouraged to examine artistic creations, their ability to appreciate art and to create it increases gradually. But it should be remembered that it is not possible to develop this aesthetic ability in all children.
Development of the Aesthetic Sense in school
The aesthetic sense of the child next develops in the school. Schools that encourage artistic expression, painting and acting normally develop the child’s artistic sense better than the other schools that takes such subjects as a matter of course. In the beginning the child does not care to attain to other’s remarks on his artistic expression, and neither is he bothered how closely his painting approximates to the model. In the first and second classes a child does his drawings without any model. But by the time he reaches the third class he makes all possible effort to draw to a model. And in this stage, he is more amenable to comments from his teachers. Extreme criticism has adverse effect because it discourages the child, hence even his blunders should be pointed out with the greatest of tact and discretion. If so handled, the child will normally make his own effort to improve his work.
Method of Expression
Expression of the aesthetic sense takes place through the medium of making clays toys, decorating flower vases, stitching, knitting, music, dance and other arts. Individual differs in the matter in which they give expression to their artistic carvings. Some children prefer clay modeling to other forms of art while other children find it more diverting to draw pictures with pencil or colour. Aesthetic sense finds better expression if the children are provided with the objects that they desire to have. In schools the decoration of school rooms and verandahs can profitably be left to the children. Development of the aesthetic sense is more influenced by informal educational methods than by formals ones.
Aesthetic development in Adolescence
According to Early Childhood Care and Education informal educational is more influential and consequential in the adolescent stage since in this age, young boys and girls go to college to learn various forms of art. Artistic expression manifestation of the aesthetic sense in this period of life is influenced by the individual’s family background, interest abilities, means of autistics expression, attitude of the parents and teachers, etc. Besides teaching children the intellectual appreciation of beauty, efforts should be made to inculcate in them a feeling for beauty. Such training can be made facile by studying good films, natural scenic beauty, art galleries, beautiful buildings, etc. This has the effect of encouraging the students to appreciate beauty.
